Madrid, Dec 19: Girona reclaimed the top spot in La Liga with an impressive 3-0 victory at home against Alaves, securing 44 points from their initial 17 matches this season.

Yan Couto, on loan as a winger, showcased stellar form, contributing to Girona’s first two goals and earning a penalty that ultimately sealed the win at the Montilivi Stadium, as per Xinhua reports.

This triumph propelled Girona past Real Madrid, who had briefly claimed the top position for 24 hours following their 4-1 home win against Villarreal on Sunday night.

Michel Sanchez’s team demonstrated their prowess by seamlessly blending solid defensive strategies with effective attacking maneuvers. Couto and Savio dominated the flanks, setting the stage for Girona’s success.

The opening goal materialized in the 23rd minute when Couto’s shot, though blocked, fell favorably to Artem Dovbyk, who scored from close range. Portu, in his season debut, added a second in the 42nd minute with a right-footed effort inside the box, courtesy of Couto’s brilliant play.

Although Alaves sought more control in the second half, Dovbyk secured a 3-0 lead from the penalty spot after a challenge by Alaves defender Ruben Duarte on Couto. Dovbyk calmly rolled his penalty down the center as Alaves keeper Antonio Sivera dove to his left.

Girona is now set to face Real Betis on Thursday in their quest to maintain their position in the La Liga standings.
